As artist-in-residence in the Complexity Sciences Center (CSC) at University of California, Davis, I participated in the ongoing life of the lab while was collecting scientists’ dreams for the interactive digital work Dream Vortex. In Lab Meeting, scenes of the physicists and mathematicians at work alternate with dream images; in the center the day and night images meet, as two figures from a dream chase a scientific visualization of a Lorenz attractor (associated with the “butterfly effect” in Earth’s atmosphere.) The drawing in the lower left corner is a portrait of geobiologist Dawn Sumner, my collaborator on the Dream Vortex and affiliate of the CSC. From a late 2020 perspective, this pre-pandemic work eerily prefigures pandemic-era lab meetings on the Zoom platform.
