From 2000 to 2010, I was a core member of Stretcher, an artist group based in the San Francisco Bay area. Launched online in 2001, Stretcher.org has published hundreds of features, reviews, artists’ projects and blog entries; created participatory installations and events for exhibitions at the Southern Exposure Gallery and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; organized or participated in dozens of public panels, talks, and presentations to students; and taught a class through the University of California Berkeley Extension in conjunction with Bay Area Now 4. I still post occasionally to Stretcher.org, although the site is now primarily an archive serving thousands of readers each month.
About Stretcher
Stretcher’s mission is to encourage dialog about contemporary art and visual culture in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. One of the first online publications in the area, Stretcher.org covers visual arts and culture in the international art community from a Bay Area perspective. With the online site, live public events, and related media projects, Stretcher increases the reach and visibility of Bay Area conversations and criticism. In this way, Stretcher stimulates creative development in our community, enhancing the intensity, focus, and relevance of art to the issues we face.
